The health cooker

advertisement

UPON arriving in Zhuhai, near Macao and Hong Kong, after three years in Southwest China, where the only real western restaurant 10 years ago was at the Holiday Inn, I asked, to my future demise, "Is there a McDonald's here?"

Soon I found myself having most breakfasts there and, for lunch, either burgers or going to KFC where I could point to the food pictures. It was comforting to know that, unlike in a Chinese restaurant, I would get exactly what I ordered.

However, I put on weight – a lot of it. But that was the minor damage. Far worse was yet to come.

Chinese food cooked at home was wonderful, but soon I discovered that one could cook everything from vegetables and rice to meatballs and chicken in the microwave. So I did, thinking it must be healthier than frying in oil or boiling away the nutrients.

Well, I even reheated cheeseburgers in the microwave!

Meanwhile, the rice cooker stayed in the cabinet. It was slow, old-fashioned, and an unnecessary inconvenience.

Years of that combination – American fast food loaded with preservatives and MSG, plus microwave-mutated foods packed with harmful free radicals – began taking their toll.

Skin rashes sent me to the hospital for all kinds of treatment, western and Chinese. Aching joints made it impossible to stand without support. Injuries, especially to the knees, were frequent. Hearing and vision impairment came and went. Fatigue. Rapid heart beat. Anxiety and nervousness. …

"But you look so healthy," my students exclaimed in a three-hour class during which I never sat down or stood still. "How do you do it?"

"Well," I replied, "I drink green and flower tea instead of coffee or soda. I eat like the Chinese: a wide variety of vegetables with small amounts meat along with rice. I avoid fast-food restaurants and insist on no MSG.

"And I make or reheat 95 per cent of my meals in the rice cooker."

Seriously, I pulled the rice cooker out from under the counter and slid the microwave in its place. Good riddance to it.

Now, as the rice cooks or water boils down below (perhaps containing corn, sausage or noodles), the vegetables and meat steam healthily above.

Use your rice cooker. To me, it's such a life-saver that I often use two at a time.

And stay out of the hospital.

Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

Well, the window opened. And wouldn't you know it, at a moment when I have little time. But I had just received two nice messages from the mother of my grandson, and so I squeaked out a few minutes to post these two.

Tomorrow? I don't know.

I'm no doctor but as a Mom it never stops me from adding my two cents on the dietary issues. While little is spoken about the gmo foods, it is known they have novel proteins that cause allergic reactions and immune system triggers. Skin rash and arthritic joints are two very common immune reactions and it is possible the gmo corn, soy, rice, canola and others have contributed as the primary factors in the "bad diet" of chemicals and additives. Just two cents on that with wishes to eat well and be healthy!

My window to Newsvine was closed again; a sign of things to come and go; and just opened now, for a moment, I suspect. Such is life.

But, Pamela, attacking gmo is not the issue with me. The thing I have learned is that I had stupidly let others take control of what was going into my being. Food additives, modifications, unnatural stuff.

"The Health Cooker" is about closing the pot, putting a lid on it.

Food for thought, literally. This is a useful reminder to us all of the dangers of getting too sucked into convenience. Health should be of primary concern. But how often do we take a chance in favour of convenience or just sheer laziness. I don't exclude myself from that either:-)

Raat ki Raani,

With great reluctance, I opened today what is to me the forbidden Newsvine and found I could not even vote, let alone comment or post.

But, suddenly, when I must sleep because of work tomorrow, apparently I can.

Newsvine is not a tree I can grasp or climb, but a sunbeam which glows only briefly in accordance with the transporting clouds.

Thanks, and don't be lazy unless, like me, you dream.

Thank you for putting that microwave away Uncle John. My best friend is my rice cooker & my steamer pots. I just need to learn to stay away from soda pop and coffee. I've been drinking more hot tea (instead of the sugar infested "southern" iced tea) and tons of water. Now we just need to make sure my Dad stays away from junk food when Jane is out of town and we're good! I love you! Keep writing and I will always read!
